Silly Sandwich Toothpicks

Last night I decided to fix some BLT's for din-din. (Ok, they were BLAT's. I added avocado.) While the bacon was sizzling I had a fun idea! I love getting those fancy fringed sandwich toothpicks when I order up a tasty sammie at a restaurant or deli. (It's the simple things that make me giddy.) So, I decided to make up my own version of them.
My old-school Dymo label maker was all I needed! Make 2 labels & stick 'em back-to-back, with the toothpick in-between. If you don't have a label maker in your crafty stash, you can create a similar look by simply stamping letters/words onto circle dot stickers. Again, adhere 2 stickers back-to-back.
Here are a couple other version I came up with:
Garage sale stickers.

Tiny stars made from a mini punch. A little dab of glue is all you need.
My girls loved these on their sandwiches!
You can totally personalize these for baby showers, weddings, birthdays, etc.
I really could have gone crazy making silly sandwich toothpicks. But I found out that doing this during the prime hours of tummy grumbling is not such a good idea.

TTV Photography.

Last night I picked up some old cameras at my mom's house that once belonged to my grandpa Bill. I'm really intrigued & totally excited to get into TTV Photography. (TTV= Through The Viewfinder) I took a few pictures in the dark, by the lamp, just to play around. But I think I don't have the proper camera.

I think for TTV you need this style of camera. You know, the kind with the large viewfinder & you look down into it? I could be wrong. I'm just getting into this. But I'm pretty sure that's how they get all those cool square shots with the lovely rounded corners. So, I'll be searching eBay, thrift stores, garage sales. And dreaming of one day owning one.For a great TTV Blog, check out through the viewfinder. Flickr also has lots of TTV groups, but THIS is the one I joined. I just drool while looking through all the amazing photos. That flickr group is also a GREAT resource for all things "newbie TTV".

And in completely unrelated TTV news, my blog hit a HUGE record yesterday!!! My previous post about the Bedside Hanging Organizer Tutorial made it on the CRAFT:blog! And it seems I received a very large number of hits from stumbleupon.com!! 6,235 views??! That's crazy. And awesome. At one point yesterday I saw 390 people browsing my blog at one time. I thought for sure my blog would blow up.
Ok, I'm off to have tea with my mom & grandmother.
Happy Saturday!!
{I'll be craftn' this weekend, getting ready for the Shop Update on Tuesday!! Fun new rings & other things! Did you see this photo yet?}

Hanging Bedside Organizer

I love crafting with felt! I found inspiration for this project while searching in the dollar bins at Target. There was a cheesy cheapo version for sale & I immediately thought, "I can do this! Only WAY cuter!"
To make this handy-dandy little organizer, you'll need felt, scissors, & a sewing machine. Pinking shears are optional. And, though I didn't use any in this tutorial, you could completely make this project "no-sew" by using some fabric glue.

The first thing you'll need to do is measure how long you want your organizer to hang. Ultimately this will slide right between your box spring & your mattress. So, measure from your box spring down.
I chose to have about 11" hang down. Add 18" to whatever measurement you have. (The 18" is what will slip between the box spring & mattress.) My final piece of felt measures 29" x 11".

I traced a scallop design on the edges & then cut it out. I didn't create the scalloped edges all the way up---since 18" of the piece of felt will not even show.

Next I cut out different shapes for the pockets. There are 4 pockets total.
I tried making this easy by labeling the pieces with letters---from biggest to smallest. The largest piece, "A", is the main felt piece that all the other felt pockets will be sewn onto.
"B"--measures 8 1/4" wide x 6 1/4" tall
"C"--measures 4 1/2" wide x 5 1/4" tall
"D"--measures 8 1/4" wide x 2 3/4" tall
"E"--measures 2 3/4" wide x 3 1/4" tall
Once you have your pocket designs laid out, sew the embellishment onto each of the individual pockets:

Now, sew the finished smaller pockets onto the larger pockets:
These pieces will now be sewn onto the largest scalloped felt piece. Pin & sew them in place. Remember to keep the tops of the pouches open. You know, for the whole "pocket" effect to work. I also added 3 vintage button embellishments before this largest pocket was sewn on.
Now you're ready to slide the excess under your mattress. Fill the pockets with a diary, pencils, a small flashlight, a favorite toy, a love letter, a dream journal, etc. My 6 year old adored this one I made for her!
Here is another version that is more simple. Cut a large piece of felt approximately 29-30" long & 14 1/2" wide. Cut 9 pieces of smaller felt 4" wide x 3" high. Use pinking shears on the sides & bottom.
Pazely & I picked out a rainbow of felt. She had fun helping me find matching buttons in my stash of vintage buttons.
After sewing on each button, pin the felt pockets in place onto your large felt piece.
I took a more time consuming route & even matched the thread in my sewing machine to the felt & buttons.
Once finished, it'll look something like this:
Pazely loves all things tiny, so that's why I made her organizer with a bunch of smaller pockets. Kids could help make this version in a snap---with the fabric glue.
Have fun!

Thank You Cards...LPS Style.

Just wanted to show the Littlest Pet Shop party thank-you cards I finished. Same simple style as the invitations, but blank on the back. Little Pazely worked so hard to personally fill out each one!! And I'm still totally impressed with my cute photo stickers from Walmart!!

Cream Puff Tower

I came up with this last-minute dessert idea for an impromptu birthday celebration my family had for my visiting 17-year-old nephew. I melted chocolate chips in the microwave & dipped the very bottoms of cream puffs into the gooey chocolatey goodness & arranged them in a towering shape on a large platter. (The chocolate is like a "glue", keeping the cream puffs from falling all over the place.) Once they were stacked, I drizzled some more chocolate all over.

It was SUPER easy & SUPER fun to make!! You could even use white chocolate chips colored with food coloring. Or add chopped/diced pecans or other nuts to the melted chocolate before drizzling all over.

The cream puffs were found in the freezer section of my grocery store. This dessert would make a cool treat for any hot summer day!

Week in Review

It was definitely a week of family. My 17 year old nephew was visiting all week from New Orleans. And that meant family dinners, bbq's, get-togethers, park visits, boating & water play!
I realized that I really haven't been craftin' for my business all week---but, instead, craftin' with my girls. It's been quite fun!

Hey, check out an interview of moi on my Etsy team blog: Eastern Washington Etsy Team (EWAET). Click HERE to read it.

I've really been enjoying the mellow pace of Summer. I plan on taking advantage of that again this week.

Happy Monday!

The Biggest 'Littlest Pet Shop' Birthday Party Post EVERS.

My efforts to create a handmade party within a trademarked theme went over pretty well, I must say. My 5-year old loved her "Littlest Pet Shop" party. But then again, the presents were her favorite part. I could have had soggy streamers & booger cupcakes & she wouldn't have cared. As long as there were presents. I admit I stressed & felt guilty that I couldn't buy every "Littlest Pet Shop" birthday decor ever made. But, I got over it. I was even rushed at the last minute & didn't have time to make a banner, hang balloons or create our traditional birthday sidewalk chalk messages. But, that's OK. That's one thing I realized when trying to come up with ways to plan this {somewhat challenging} party: the most important part of any party is the person you're celebrating.

With that said, let's get down to the details!!
The invitations: I LOVED how the invitations came out. Even if they didn't turn out how I expected. They turned out BETTER than I had planned! They were a great start & perfect feel for the party theme.

And! Oh. My. Golly. I just got these back from Walmart. I ordered them online, the same time I ordered the 1-hour prints for the invitations. I took one of my Littlest Pet Shop photos & had it made into stickers!!! Twenty 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" stickers cost $4.77 with tax. They turned out SO SUPER CUTE! They'll be the "seal" on the back of the envelopes when we send out the thank-you notes. I am very impressed & will be using this service again!

The personalized photo invitations & stickers were my favorite detail of the party.

The food: My mom & I were able to shop for some yummy fruits & tasty homemade breads the day before the party at the Farmer's Market. Party guests munched on strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, raspberries, pineapple, Bing & Rainier cherries, guava & apricots. Blueberry bread, apple bread, zucchini bread & cheese bread were also served.
I also invented (OK, not really invented) a delicious punch that tastes like an orange creamsicle! Just mix vanilla ice cream with orange flavored pop. You can also see from the photo that we decorated the cups with Littlest Pet Shop stickers.
The first thing the wee party guests received were little tags, each embellished with their name & a different colored heart. Set up in one corner of the room was an "Adoption Center". I displayed Pazely's Littlest Pet Shop centers & scattered packaged pets all over. Each pet also had a tag attached to it. The kids got to go over to the adoption center & find the pet with the tag that matched the one they received with their name on it.
The craft: the kids got to decorate little white wedding favor boxes (12/$1 @ The Dollar Tree) with markers, jewels, stickers, paper, etc as homes for their new Little Pets.

Here's how some of their boxes turned out:
And I had to join in on the fun too:
The game: I stole this game idea from my friend Jules. Pazely helped me color some Littlest Pet Shop character pages that I printed out from THIS WEBSITE. I randomly scattered the pages all over the floor. As I played music, the kids bounced around like bunnies or hopped around like frogs etc. & when the music stopped, the kids found a colored picture to remain standing on. I had all the pictures also printed out in smaller versions that I stuck in a hat. I pulled out a picture & whoever happened to be standing on that picture received a prize! That person was out of the game & I continued on until everyone won a prize. The prize? I made playdough & the kids got to choose the color they wanted. I purchased a 4-pack of small plastic containers at The Dollar Tree & attached (with double-stick tape) some pictures I printed out & colored. I also named the colors: Puppy Purple, Lizard Lime, Tabby Cat Tan & Bea-u-TEAL-ful Butterfly. My fingers ended up being as intense & colorful as the playdough. I used the Neon food colors made by McCormick. I really like using them.
Next was cupcake time! I crafted up more cupcake picks like I made for Pazely's birthday celebration at preschool a month ago. I just cut 3 different sized circles from random patterned scrapbook paper & glued them to bamboo skewers cut in half. You can use this idea for ANY theme.

I had these really cool candles I was waiting to use for a special occasion. I got them at Liquidation World. They are thick & made of plastic & the flame is colored!! Green, pink, orange, blue & red.
After cupcakes were consumed, it was time for a treasure hunt!

Handmade "Littlest Pet Shop" party bags were filled with stickers, glow-in-the dark bracelets, magnet scene sets, a mini coloring book (that I made by resizing the images I used from the game & stapling them together), crayons & bubbles.
For the bubbles, I purchased a 9-pack of wedding favor bubbles at The Dollar Tree & wrapped them each in a strip of paper & embellished with stickers.
The treasure hunt was really fun & perfect for kids who can't read yet. The day before the party I took pictures of some items around our house & sent them to the 1-hour photo processing at Walmart. At the party, while the kids were eating cupcakes, I set up the treasure hunt by first hiding the party favor bags in a secret location & then I hid the photos in the proper spots. When the kids were ready for the hunt, I gave them the first photo clue: the garden hose. So, they ran to the garden hose to find ANOTHER photo clue: the pink picket fence. They ran in the backyard to the pink picket fence & found ANOTHER picture clue waiting for them. And so on & so on. The last picture clue led them to where the favor bags were hiding! And they were a hit!!! Pazely is still dragging her bag around with her wherever she goes.

Here is a picture of Pazely finding a picture clue in the mailbox.
After all the fun indoors, the kids were set free to play outside in their swimsuits. Otter pops were ordered up & water fun was had!
Pazely & I took many fun birthday party fun jumpy pictures.

And she was a very satisfied party girl! After the party we went to the park for a bbq, boating, playing & jet skiing. Here is how she looked on our drive home from a very full & very happy day.

I was very happy to take on the challenge of a Trademarked themed party. It stretched my creative party planning process & I would happily do it again!

Cool Treat

The girls & I headed out to the Farmer's Market this morning & picked up some raspberries. We immediately came home & blended up some fresh raspberry milkshakes.
Pazely wasn't interested in sipping on these cool treats. After examining the raspberries, she said: "Eeeeeewwww!! They're all hairy!"
Zoey & I slurped away, making milkshake moustaches along the way.

Newspaper Hats

More newspaper headgear today!

I have always wanted to learn how to make these newspaper soldier hats. Yesterday I finally made one. And I'm so shocked at how easy it was!

Simply take a full sheet of newspaper & lay it in front of you, just like in this picture:

Now take the two sides & fold them until they meet the middle & form a point:

Fold one of the long rectangle flaps up & crease:

Flip the hat over & fold up the remaining flap. That's it!

Although, when I originally folded mine, the hat seemed HUGE & looked funny to me! (See photo below.)
So, I folded the brim up one more time. Perfect fit!

After learning this basic hat fold, I also learned how to make several other hats from the book "50 Ways To Have Fun With Old Newspapers" by Bill Severn, 1978.

Academic Mortar Board, Bishop's Miter/Royal Crown, Bullfighter's Hat, Jester's Cap, Printer's Hat, Military Cap.
Fireman/Fisherman's Hat, Pirate/Admiral/Napoleon Hat, Mexican Sombrero, Sunshade Hat

Fold on crafters!

Newspaper Crowns

After being inspired by the bounty of children's crafty books I recently borrowed from the library, this is the first project I attempted. Today is Pazely's REAL birthday, & I thought it only appropriate we make some party crowns.

The project simply calls for newspaper. That's it. BUT, the girls & I painted a watercolor wash over ours to make things a bit more schnazzy. You can do your painting before the crown is cut out, or after.

Crease your paper as seen in the picture. The folds should be at the top & left side. Measure 6 inches in...

...& cut all the way up.

Now lay your paper flat so you'll have a doubled piece of newspaper, approximately 22" long x 6" tall, with a fold at the bottom. Fold that in half, from short end to short end. Keep folding the paper this way until you end up with a folded bunch that's about 1 1/2" across.

Measure 2" down & you'll be cutting from that mark diagonally across. See the shaded area? That will be chopped off.

Like so. You can also create a rounded corner by arching your diagonal line.

Right under that 2" mark, you can cut out a design if you like. Half a heart, half a star, half a diamond or circle, etc. Once you cut it & open it up, the whole design will be revealed.
Like so.

Now wrap the crown aruond your child's head (or your head) & staple in the appropriate spot to hold the crown in place. (Don't staple it TO the head though.)

You can decorate with gems & jewels if you want.

Then let the royal riot begin!

The star one would look cute painted red, white & blue for the 4th of July!

P.S. Oh, the book I learned this from is called "50 Ways To Have Fun With Old Newspapers" by Bill Severn

P.P.S. Happy Birthday Pazely!!

Summer Fun Craftin'!

The girls & I made a trip to the library yesterday. We got so many books & videos I could barely carry my super duper JUMBO bag out the door. And, the dork that I am, I weighed them when we got home. 27 pounds of library goodies! I borrowed so many books about kiddie crafts--I can't wait for some summer fun craftin' with my girls! I had to take a picture from one of the books & show you. The "supplies" list cracked me up: a nail...electrical tape...a graham cracker. You know, the usual crafty supplies.

I'm gearing up to show you lots of fun & simple projects to fill these wonderfully lazy days of summer!

So, stay tuned!

Week in Review

The fam & I like to go every year to our local Cool Desert Nights car cruise. This year I packed a picnic dinner & we set out early (2 hours early), picked a great spot, spread our blankets on the sidewalk & ate our yummy meal while busy traffic sped by. We were 2 hours early so we could get a nice spot under shady trees. It's always kinda funny to sit out by the road & eat dinner. An old truck pulling the cutest little chubby stubby camper drove by in this parade-of-sorts & I decided I need one when I grow up. {haha!} I'm seriously gonna start throwing my pennies in a jar to save up for something like that. Now I just need to convince Mr. WhiMSy love that road trips are fun & camping is not evil.

I'm working on getting together a "Littlest Pet Shop PARTY!" post. The party was a dream-come true to my little one. Although it went different than I expected, it was fun to plan. PHEW! What a crash I had when the party was over!

And of course what is summer without more bbq's, jet-skiing, water play, family get-togethers, & outdoor fun? My 17 year old nephew is also in town, visiting from New Orleans. I have officially inducted him into my Jumpy Hall of Fame. And he's showing me all the latest dance moves the teenagers are doing these days. The Stanky Leg?? (I'd show a video, but the song has naughty words. I don't do naughty words.)

We had such a busy fun week! But I'm afraid these jam-packed days full of jolly good fun often include cranky wee ones who've overdosed on all the giddy goodness!
